On the eve of the Day of National Remembrance of the Victims of the Great Patriotic War and the Genocide of the Belarusian people and within the framework of events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders, the staff of the Republican Center for State Environmental Expertise, Training, Advanced Training and Retraining of Personnel of the Ministry of Natural Resources cleaned the territory adjacent to the sculpture “Prisoner of War” from garbage, foliage and branches, the sculpture and memorial plaque were cleaned of dust and dirt, and the green spaces were cared for.
During the Great Patriotic War, a military camp was built for an artillery regiment of the Red Army at the intersection of modern Ya. Kolas and Kalinin streets: three brick three-storey typical barracks buildings, a hangar for storing guns and tractor equipment, a DOS (house of officers).
In July 1941, after the occupation of Minsk, the Nazis set up a prisoner of war camp in the Pushkin barracks. A memorial plaque and sculpture on Kalinin Street, where it forms an intersection with Ya. Kolas Street, now reminds of those events.
In the year of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders, holding events to restore order in places of military and military glory is especially important and this is only a small part of what we can do in gratitude for our freedom, independence and peaceful sky above our heads.
