The Ministry of Natural Resources project continues to remove obsolete pesticides from agricultural warehouses in Belarus

Within the framework of the implementation of the international technical assistance project “Sustainable Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants and Chemicals in the Republic of Belarus, GEF-6” (ITP project), coordinated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, about 180 tons of obsolete pesticides have been removed from agricultural warehouses in the Minsk region this year. Hazardous waste has been sent to France for environmentally safe disposal at a specialized facility.

Obsolete pesticides are obsolete pesticides, mainly containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

The objective of this ITP project is to ensure protection of human health and the environment by eliminating existing stockpiles of POPs and developing capacity for their sustainable management within the framework of the environmentally sound chemicals management mechanism in the country. This objective is achieved through the implementation of activities in three components:

  • sustainable management of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs);
  • elimination of obsolete pesticide stockpiles;
  • strengthening and planning capacity for sustainable chemicals management.

As part of the MTP project, in previous years, obsolete pesticides were completely removed from 21 warehouses in the Vitebsk and Grodno regions – this is about 920 tons. To date, 6 out of 12 warehouses in the Minsk region have been cleared of this hazardous waste.

The removal of obsolete pesticides from the remaining 6 agricultural warehouses in the Minsk region is planned to be completed this year.

During the removal process, waste of hazard classes 1-2 located in warehouses is repackaged, weighed and, in compliance with safe cross-border transportation, delivered to specialized European enterprises, where they are environmentally safe neutralized.
