Irina Solovieva, Deputy Head of the Department of Analytical Work, Science and Information of the Main Directorate of Environmental Policy, International Cooperation and Science of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, spoke at a press conference about the sectors in which the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection conducted research in 2023, BelTA has learned.

“In 2023, the implementation of measures to create a software package for assessing the hydrometeorological situation in the basins of transboundary rivers of Belarus using Earth remote sensing data will continue. This work is being carried out jointly with representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Space data from Earth remote sensing as an additional source of information on the state of hydrological objects will help to provide a complete picture of the state of water bodies, snow cover and flooding by river waters on the territory of transboundary rivers,” said Irina Solovieva.

She also added that measures are being taken to study complex geological objects and develop methods for predicting promising areas for various types of mineral raw materials, which increases the investment attractiveness of developing the country’s mineral resource base.

“Scientific developments in the field of calculating direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions make it possible to assess the carbon intensity of domestic products and the likely losses of exporters to the European Union due to the introduction of a carbon fee,” explained the deputy head of the department of analytical work, science and information of the main department of environmental policy, international cooperation and science of the Ministry of Natural Resources.

According to her, for all countries, issues of environmental safety, depletion of natural resources and climate change are extremely relevant, as evidenced by the significant place of climate policy in socio-political and scientific discussions.

“In Belarus, the issues of sustainable use of natural resources and environmental protection, the transition to environmentally friendly and resource-saving technologies have been defined as priorities by the head of state. Therefore, the main tasks for improving scientific activity that we set for ourselves in the Year of Quality are the further development of the scientific potential of organizations, high-quality implementation of research work taking into account the development of new areas, as well as the development of cooperation in the development and implementation of projects and programs of the Union State.”
