On June 17, 1994, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification was adopted. In honor of this event, the UN declared June 17 the annual Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi—arid and dry subhumid areas as a result, primarily, of human activities and climate change.
The problems of desertification and drought are problems of global importance, as they have serious consequences for all regions of the world, and joint actions of the international community are needed to solve them.
The theme chosen for this year’s Desertification and Drought Day is “United for the Earth: Our Heritage. Our Future” is designed to mobilize all sectors of society in support of rational land management.
The Republic of Belarus joined the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in accordance with Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 393 dated July 17, 2001.
