Day of Nature Reserves and National Parks – January 11

January 11 is the Day of Nature Reserves and National Parks, which are the centers of biodiversity conservation around the world.

The Day of Nature Reserves and National Parks was first celebrated in 1997 on the initiative of the Wildlife Conservation Center (Russia) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

In Belarus, the first reserve, Berezinsky, was created in 1925 to preserve beavers, which were then on the verge of extinction, as well as other animal species. The first national park in Belarus was Belovezhskaya Pushcha in 1939 through the reorganization of the reserve and hunting ground of the same name. Currently, there is the Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve in Belarus and the Polesie State Radiation and Ecological Reserve in the southeast of Belarus, created in 1988 for the purpose of conducting radiobiological and ecological research. As well as four national parks: Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Pripyatsky, Braslav Lakes, Narochansky. Their area is 2.3% of the area of Belarus. Economic activity is completely prohibited on the territory of protected areas.

Reserves and national parks are specially protected natural areas.
